About The Site
I started Shine On Mom to support other mothers. As a mom of three kids, aged 6, 5, and 2, I am constantly scouring the internet for information on everything kid related.
The invention of the internet was a splendid gift to moms. I can’t imagine how loony my mom must have been without it! Either that or she was gloriously SANE for lack of the world wide web. Hmmm… to be discussed later.
This space is my happy place to share my experiences, things I love and solutions that worked for me, in a supportive way. We may not all parent the same way, but we are all parenting from the same place and doing our best for our kids, every single day.
I hope you will share YOUR experiences with this community so we can all learn from each other and help one another SHINE ON.
My mother once told me I was her carefree child. I’m not really sure that that is accurate because I’m fairly reserved and orderly. I do move quite a bit, but my parents are to blame because by the time I was six years old, I had been in three different grade one classes in two different countries.
I was born in Toronto, and then moved to suburban New Jersey, which gets such a bad rap for what I remember as a lovely green area of the United States. When I was ten years old we moved to Mexico City, which was one of the best experiences of my life, and a place where I would meet life-long friends. My parents intentionally moved us all back to Toronto in time for me to start high school. It was a tough move for me, but very smart on their part as it allowed me to establish roots in Canada.
I have an undergrad degree in Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University and a graduate business degree in International Marketing from the University of San Diego. I think this is around the time that my mother called me carefree, which does make sense. Beach life = happy life (says the girl who lives in Toronto and is very happy).
As luck would have it, I ended up in the computer industry which is where I met my Edward Norton doppelganger husband. We dated long distance for a long time, married and moved to Chicago a month after our wedding. A year and a half later we welcomed our first child. So after several years in project management and marketing roles, I made the move to mom.
We lived in Chicago for 7+ years where we had all three of our kids. When the youngest turned one, Eddie got a job in Toronto. We celebrate a hybrid of US and Canadian holidays and are teaching the kids both national anthems as well as both versions of “This Land is Your Land”. Eddie was shocked to find out there were two, which you probably only know if you are Canadian!
I started blogging in the fall of 2009 for Brooke Burke’s website, ModernMom.com, and have been a featured contributor there ever since. I am a news junkie, a jean-a-holic, my weakness is celebrity news and music makes me happy. The time has come to put all of my work on my own site, and it shall henceforth be named, Shine On Mom! (said in a booming Oprah like voice).
I look forward to connecting with you, and I hope you will connect with me and with other moms on this site, share your experiences with us and we can all laugh until our bellies hurt and Shine On through the craziness of it all.
Thank you for visiting and I hope to see you back here often!
